DEVELOPMENT AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A THREE ROLLERS ACHA (DIGITARIA EXILIS) DEHUSKING MACHINE

ARID ZONE JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT

In this study, a three rollers Acha-dehusking machine was designed, constructed and tested. The machine has the following units-feeding, processing and separating unit. The materials used for the fabrication were selected locally based on the design considerations and design analysis of the machine components. The three rollers Acha-dehusking machine which cost ₦52 300 at the time of its fabrication was finally assembled and evaluated. The Acha paddy fed through the hopper was made to pass through two roll gaps between fixed and adjustable rollers rotating in opposite direction at a speed ratio of 1.5:1 where it was abraded and dehusked. The mixture of the dehusked grain and the husk were separated by current of air blown from the winnowing fan in the separating unit. The dehusked grains, husk and the undehusked grains were separated and weighed. From the outcome of the test, the efficiency and the output of the machine were found to be 69.6% and 22.14Kg/hr respectively.

Design , Fabrication and Testing of Proso Millet De-husking Machine

Bipasyana Dhungana

2017

Though Proso Millet is a staple food in many regions of Nepal due to its high nutrient content, it is not cultivated on a large scale because of difficulty in processing. This millet cannot be de-husked with the machines available for larger grains and appropriate de-husking machines for Proso millets are also not available. So, this research aims to design, fabricate and test a Proso Millet de-husking machine. This machine has the following units – feeding, rolling, de-husking and separating unit. The Proso millet passes through the rolling unit where it is abraded by two shafts and is de-husked in the de-husking unit. The Proso grain is separated from the chaff by passing the mixture through a current of air supplied by a fan. The materials used for the fabrication of the machine were selected based on the design considerations and analyses of its components. The components of the machine were selected locally and machined to specifications using machines such as the lathe, grindin...

IRJET- Development and Performance Evaluation of a Roasted Groundnut Dehulling Machine

IRJET Journal

IRJET, 2021

The major problem facing the availability of groundnut in Nigerian market is the post-harvest processing in which removal of chaff is a major. This research was undertaken to develop and evaluate a roasted groundnut dehulling machine. The components of the machine were designed following the standard machine design procedures. Dehulling experiments were carried out at machine speed of 200, 300, 400 and 500 rpm and at clearance values of 0.0095, 0.0090 and 0.0085 m. In each run of the experiment, 1 kg of a well-prepared groundnut was used. Results from this study showed that at machine speed of 300 rpm, optimum dehulling efficiency was achieved and above this speed, the efficiency reduces. Also, it was deduced that change in the separation efficiency depends on machine speed followed by clearance although the effect is not significant (P<0.05). Furthermore, it was revealed that throughput capacity of the developed machine increases with increased speed. The change in the machine capacity significantly (P<0.05) depends on the machine speed followed by the clearance. Conclusively from the study, best conditions for dehulling roasted groundnut are clearance level of 9.50 mm at a machine speed of 300 rpm to yield a dehulling efficiency of 80.96 %, separation efficiency of 91.89 % and mechanical damage at a reduced value of 1.93 % at a throughput capacity of 55.27 kg/h. The study showed that the develop machine is efficient for groundnut dehulling operation.

Development and Performance Evaluation of Coconut Dehusking Machine

THE IJES Editor

-Contrary to the immense economic importance of coconut for both industrial and domestic uses, dehusking of the fruits after harvesting constitutes the most difficult and dangerous operations during processing. Performance evaluation of coconut dehusking machine was carried out. The machine was designed and fabricated using locally sourced materials. It consists of the supporting frame where the machine components were mounted. The de-husking unit consists of two galvanized steel pipe rollers with spikes and shafts. The driving and driven roller shafts are mild steel rods supported at both ends by ball bearings. Six spur gears were used with various pitch circle diameters and number of teeth respectively, and were attached proportionally to the driving and driven roller based on their functions in the machine. The flywheel is driven by a pinion which is attached to pulley and connected with a V-belt to the pulley of the electric motor, and rotates at the same speed with the driving gear. Two middle gears mounted on the same shaft with the flywheel were also incorporated to produce high torque. When the motor is switch on, power is transmitted through the gearing arrangement to the rollers with plurality of spikes and rotate them in opposite directions towards the center there by causing both the gripping and tearing of the husk when coconut is placed in between the rollers. While the rollers rotate, a feeding clamp welded to the frame is used to feed coconut fruit in the de-husking unit and a spring is attached to enable relative motion between the coconut fruit and the rollers during de-husking. Different sizes of coconut fruits were loaded at different times on the machine and the time taken for each fruit to be dehusked was recorded. A total of 80 fresh nuts were tested. The performance evaluation shows that the average efficiency of the machine was 92.50% while the average capacity is 120.6 coconuts per hour. On the other hand, the percentage number of distorted and broken coconuts were 7.5% and 3.75%. These figures are however infinitesimal Compare to the existing coconut dehusking machines. Hence it is recommended for use by farmers.

Step by Step Design Analysis and Calculations of an African Breadfruit Dehulling Machine

Ozigbo Emmanuel

JOURNAL OF ADVANCES IN AGRICULTURE, 2016

African breadfruit seeds dehulling is a lucrative business in Nigeria. There is a high demand of the seeds in Southeastern of the Country. A little quantity of it is highly priced in the market. Despite the high demand of the breadfruit seeds for both nutritional and medicinal value, the rural processors usually dodge the production process. This is as a result of hard labour, time wasted and rigorous processes as associated with the manual method of dehulling the seeds – which are usually over 900 seeds in a single fruit, spongy pulp. The seeds have two coats, the outer coat is usually harder and thicker than the inner coat which make dehulling operation more tedious. The dehulling takes about 70% operation of the African breadfruit processing. Therefore, this paper reviewed the types of materials that can be used for fabrication a dehuller; designs considerations; design analysis and calculations of an African breadfruit seeds dehuller so as to provide a working document for des...

Performance Characteristics of a Coconut Dehusking Machine

Alexander M. Pascua

2018

A coconut dehusking machine was developed and evaluated in terms of dehusking performance. The model consists of different component assembly parts such as speed reduction, transmission, coconut base, dehusking blade, frame, and control system. It is powered by a 7.5 hp gasoline engine and with an average output capacity of 240 coconut per hour. Its salient features which give it an edge over other existing machines in attaining effective dehusking are as follows: 1) a dehusking blade with cutting tooth and blade side face angle, 2) movable coconut base assembly, 3) ability to remove husks starting at the basal portion, which is the softest part of the coconut, and 4) operable by a single person. The cutting tooth initiates the initial penetration of the blades while the side face angle can assist better piercing or shearing action on the coconut husks. The coconut base can be moved upward or downward and can accommodate different coconut sizes. The effects of different factors whic...
